Touchdowns per Touch

I'm on a touchdown per play kick right now. I'm digging deep into ramblinwreck.com's data to pull out some more interesting information for all the GT fans. I had to truncate my data diving to CCG/CPJ Era players and players with a minimum of 100 touches. This means they played in 2002-2008 seasons and the data includes their 1999-present statistics. Even the non-stat people will like some of the basic observations about this list highlighted in yellow.

The data is broken down by rank in this system, position, name, # of touches, touchdowns (receive, return, rush, pass), and % of touches that result in a touchdown. I really don't want to do the negative version (turnovers per touch) but I think I might eventually.

Josh's stats seem rough compared to Reggie's because Josh doesn't get credit for good reads that go the distance while Reggie did get credit for good passes to Calvin that went for 6. An interesting comparison is the backfield comparison of Reggie/Tashard/PJ versus Josh/Diesel/Roddy. The Chan backfield trio went the distance 3.54% of their offensive plays while CPJ's backfield trio goes the distance 4.73% of the time. This doesn't account for the Cox Bros., Rashaun Grant, or Chris Woods but I think it's interesting.

I'd also like to note that anyone doubting Calvin's greatness can look at the stats. He took it to the house once every 6.67 plays. Greatness. And in case you were wondering, Calvin's average is one touchdown per 7.82 plays in the NFL.

As a supplemental group, here're some guys that I thought I could also provide data on. They were legit role players who didn't make the 100 touch limit I set for the first data grouping.

The All-Gailey Team

In an old media guide, players were designated to the All-Heisman/Alexander Era Teams, All-Dodd Era Teams, and All-Post Dodd Era Teams. I personally thought it was merely pandering to the football alum during the Dodd Era because they were the big time donors at the time (in their 50's and up).

So I came up with the idea of an All-Gailey Team. Some choices are obvious, some took a little thinking. I compiled some highlights/interviews/links of all the different players, too. Without further adieu, here's my selections for the All-2002 to 2007 Football Team:

This is up to debate especially along the lines. I'm sure some would argue for Travis Parker at DT and Kamichael at LB. Both are legit. Thoughts/suggestions are welcome.

Georgia State football

So Rivals/Yahoo! put out a very good article about the up and coming Georgia State football program. Old Tech connections include the head coach, Bill Curry, who coached the Jackets from 1980-1986 and kinda abandoned us for Bammer in 1987. Also, the offensive coordinator is none other than the man who put Tashard Choice in the shotgun formation - John Bond. Bond probably deserved more of a fair shake but there was really no place for him at Tech with the new offensive philosophy.

Personally, I'm excited to see GA State bring in a football team. I've always contested that there aren't enough I-A schools in the state for all of the I-A talent. Hence, Alabama/Mississippi/Tennessee/South Carolina/etc. are fielding talented Georgia High Schoolers. Keeping the talent in state would be nice from a GA-homer's perspective. Do I see the GA State crowd getting ramped up and into I-A by the time Bill Curry retires? Nope. If GA Southern and its ravenous fan base couldn't get into I-A yet, I don't see a school of loosely affiliated transients getting solidly behind the fball program.

*Congressmen Steve Cohen (D-Tennessee) was quoted hatin' on Paul Hewitt and Thaddeus Young stating Young's stay at Tech was a mockery of the NCAA/NBA 1-year rule. I tend to agree. Although Hewitt makes a great counterpoint saying that people leave Tech early due to their super computer skills (e.g. Chris Klaus).

*Matt Kuchar and David Duval are kickin' ass at U.S. Open sectional rounds. My recent foray into golf has made the famous Tech golf alum into points of conversation on the golf course. Here's an example of statement someone might make to me, "Man, [blah blah golfer] is doing great today in [crazy Irish-named] Open." My response, "Yeah, Stewart Cink's doing great, too." This is followed by head nodding, hand shakes, and other white-collar affirmations.
