New Volleyball Coach Announced/ Keep Nikki Meyer Here!

Tonya Johnson, a 6-year University of Texas assistant, has been introduced as our new volleyball coach. She is the 7th coach in GT Volleyball history and apparently she is a baller at recruiting.

So what is her first task? To take her balling recruiting skills and convince highly touted recruit Nikki Meyer, yes as in Urban Meyer's daughter, to stay here at Georgia Tech! I urge you Tonya, to get to it!

Weekend Recap: A Weekend of Awesomeness

Thursday
The weekend for us started on Thursday. And what a glorious beginning it was. Georgia Tech was the spotlight. Our astronauts were recognized, the 1998 ACC Championship Team was brought out, and various other smaller sport champions were all announced. On the sidelines, Jason Varitek and Mark Texeira made appearances along with T.I. The setting was perfect to show all the recruits (most of the season). It was a great day to be a Tech fan and boy did we impress!

Friday
Friday was a travel day. After a horribly unproductive day at work, Dane and I drove to Macon in prepartion of Georgia Tech vs. Mercer for an in-state basketball showdown. Met up with some friends along with Bird and partied in Mac-town. Editor’s Note: Totally different atmosphere at a Mercer party than a Tech party. Girls actually come, and people genuinely have fun together. Imagine that!

Saturday
What a day Saturday was! The basketball game was sloppy. At times I wondered if we were watching the football team because of our ball handling. But it all ended alright as the Jackets overcame an 17 point defecit to win it in overtime. Yeah, we rained on Mercer’s homecoming parade....barely.

75% of what needed to happen for us to finally take the Coastal has happened. If it was not for the complete incompetency of Duke, we’d have had it. NC State throttled the Tar Heels and Dabo Swinney continued to strengthen his case to take “interim” off his title in a big win over Virginia. This week, we are Virginia Fans. They MUST BEAT VIRGINIA TECH. The game is at noon, so the internet will be on constant refresh. Go Wahoos!

After basketball was Volleyball Senior Night. It ended in fine form with our beloved Jackets sweeping Maryland 3 games to 0. Our good friend Steph Robbins finished off the ‘Terps with a nice little tip over the net to seal the sweep.

Finally, to end the Weekend of Awesomeness, RRC Throwdown was Saturday night. It ended with me waking up and wearing a pair of boxers upside down like a t-shirt. Let your imagination run free with that one.

Weekend in Review

Ah bye weeks. A Saturday in which you get to sleep in, roll out of bed, crack open a beer and turn on football. And then not move more than 20 feet from the couch until midnight after College Gameday Final. Isn't it great? The ACC's "Season of Chaos" picked back up on Thursday and continued into the weekend. But let's review what happened:The Miami Hurricanes thrust themselves on to the top of the ACC Coastal Divsion with a stellar win over Virginia Tech and a UNC meltdown against Maryland...another typical day in the ACC. Virginia Tech just feels numb. Good 'Ole Gobbler Country, instead of bemoaning the loss to Miami and all things wrong with Hokie Nation, the man gets drunk. Drink it in Gobbler, whiskey turns all things numb to the world.

The game of the week was clearly North Carolina's choke job against Maryland. I mean, hey if you have any piece of the ACC Coastal lead, you're going to choke. Mike over at Tar Heel Mania, however, seemed to have kept his composure. Yeah dude, we just gotta accept the fact that it just wasn't to be. (shakes head)

From Old Virginia comes up with 16 scenarios that he believes could decide the division. Althought he forgets to talk about us. Yep, we're not out of it yet. We must beat Miami! Here's our scenario, where we only hold 25% of it in our own hands:

• 1) GT beats Miami
• 2a) UNC loses to NCSU 2b) UNC loses to Duke
• 3a) UVA loses to Clemson, beats VT 3b) VT loses to Duke, beats UVA

The Atlantic Division is just about as much of a mess as the Coastal especially with Boston College beating Florida State during its "Blackout".

Volleyball

The volleyball team got swept by the state of Florida this past weekend, losing in a heartbreaking 5 to Miami on Friday and getting beat by FSU 3-1. The Legacy Crew is still proud of the Volleybees and plans on representing at SENIOR NIGHT THIS SATURDAY AT 7:30. ALL TECH FANS MUST BEE THERE! The biggest factor for the team seemed as if they just could not seem to close when they needed too.

Basketball

On Friday, basketball got officially under way with Gani Lawal leading the Jackets with 18 points and 12 rebounds. The Jackets routed Winston-Salem State 92-47. Lots of big men, kind of sloppy with our ball-handling (basketball players must hang out with football players). Our depth runs out quickly it seems, but as usual, we are forever the optimists, we expect improvement.

The women's basketball team began their trek for the 4th straight NCAA Tournament appearance by beating Troy 73-49 on Friday as well. On Sunday, they traveled to #1 UCONN and lost 82-71. In the top-heavy world of Women's Basketball, we aren't quite there yet.

GT Volleybal and Basketball

Clearly, our minds have been fixed on football these past few months. But did you know that Georgia Tech has other sports as well!? Here are some brief notes:

Volleyball

The Georgia Tech Volleyball team wraps up their season in the next few weeks and with a win-out and some lucky spikes could take ACC conference championship and earn a berth into the NCCA Tournament. Their next home games are November 21 and 22 vs. Boston College and Maryland and finally November 28th against Clemson is the final home game. Below are the current standings:

One game separates us from the mess on top. The loss on Saturday against the Dookies hurt us (if only The Legacy showed up 15 minutes earlier!) Tech has to win out and Duke and UNC both need to lose twice for the Jackets to make the NCAA tournament.

Senior night is the 22nd against the Terps. Yes, earlier that day is Georgia Tech vs. Mercer basketball. Our suggestion to you is to drive to Macon, go to the game, come back up to Atlanta and cheer on volleyball. If The Legacy Crew does it, you have no excuse.

Basketball

The basketball regular season starts this Friday against Winston-Salem State at 8:30 PM. The disappointing news of the season so far involves Lewis Clinch, who is academically ineligible (again) for the rest of the Fall Semester, and D’Andre Bell, who is out for the season because of spinal stenosis. Clinch can regain his eligibility after December 12th. As we get to the end of football season, look for deeper entries for the basketball team.

Players to Watch: McDonald’s All-American Iman Schumpert, a 6’ 5” guard out of Oak Park, IL. Can we keep him more than one year? Only time will tell that one. Also, watch Lance Storrs. He showed some positive things last year and with Clinch out for the time being he will have a lot more responsibility on his shoulders.
